Rolling Stones Magazine calls Graham Parker “One of the most critically acclaimed graduates of the mid-1970′s British pub-rock scene”. As an angry singer-songwriter he has been compared to Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. He has recorded under Stiff Records, had a fiery relationship with Mercury, and found commercial success under Artista.
Graham Parker will light up PBC Studios in Bethalto, IL this Friday night, April 14th. One of his albums, “The Mona Lisa’s Sister“, released in 1988, is ranked by Rolling Stone as #97 among the “Top 100 Albums of the Eighties”. That comeback album is considered one of his best. Two other albums, “Squeezing Out The Sparks” 1979 (45/100) and ”Howlin’ Wind” 1976 (54/100) are ranked by Rolling Stone among the top 100 albums of the last twenty years. The previously mentioned “Squeezing Out The Sparks” also the made the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (335/500).
The bottom line here is that up in the quite little town of Bethalto, if you can get one of the 100 seats at the PBC Studio, you can get a good dose of British Rock with a slice of RnB infused Punk. Graham Parker and the Rumors has been rocking the British Empire with articulate, angry rock since the sixties. This tour finds Graham Parker solo, with Bob “Derwood” Andrews as the guest artist. Mr. Andrew’s claim to fame is as lead guitarist of “Generation X” which featured Billy Idols on vocals.
This is a rare chance to see a pair of musicians who are part of musical history and fundamental to the development of Punk Rock in the intimate atmosphere of the PBC Studio.
Following playlist has three Graham Parker videos from YouTube. Enjoy and then support venues like the PBC that reach out to diverse and interesting musicians.
